Lacrosse – Zone Defense
This page looks at how to use zone defenses in lacrosse. Lacrosse coaches often use a man-to-man defense where defenders stay with their man on defense. However, they also need to know how to use a zone defense where lacrosse defenders stay in a certain “zone” while on defense.
Zone defense is often used when defenders are not athletic enough to stay up with their opponents during a game or when a coach wants to confuse an opponent who might not know how to operate effectively against a zone defense. Most high school and college coaches use zone defense and man-to-man defense depending on the situation and opponent. In contrast, many younger teams use primarily man-to-man defense because they feel that zone defenses don’t adequately teach proper individual defensive skills.
