This page focuses on how to slide when playing defense in lacrosse. Lacrosse sliding is a team concept used by lacrosse defenders. If a teammate has been burnt by an opponent who has the ball, one of the defenders will “slide” (shift) and leave his man in order to stop this offensive player from driving to the goal. In turn, this will cause other defenders to slide (i.e. a second defender will slide in order to cover the first sliding defender’s man who is left open by the first slide).
Sliding prevents the opposing team from having an open man near the goal. It also allows the “burnt” player time to catch up and double the opponent with the ball or cover the furthest open opponent.
